CLASSES FOR EVERYONE

Pre and Post Natal Pilates

Pre and post natal pilates

Exercising when pregnant can be a daunting thought but by not participating in any form of exercise could increase your chances of getting back pain and urinary incontinence. During and After Pregnancy Pilates is one of the best form of exercise you can partake in, as it is a gentle low impact class. By following the Pilates Principles of alignment, centering and breathing you will help maintain your fitness levels but not risk the health of your baby or yourself.

The focus on Pelvic floor engagement allows you to maintain your pelvic stability when carrying your baby and reduces urinary incontinence. The postural awareness and correct alignment will teach you how to walk, stand and lay correctly. The Pilates exercises will maintain and develop the strength in your back and stomach muscles to reduce back and joint pain during and after your pregnancy. The deep thoracic breathing can aid you through your labor and reduce stress levels.

Once you have given birth it is advised to leave at least 6 weeks before returning to moderate light exercise (depending on individuals experience). If you have had a Caesarean section a minimum of 12 weeks is required depending on personal condition. You will need to get clearance from your local GP before attending a Pilates class. Pilates will help assist your body back to its original shape and strength. Pilates will regain your postural alignment and balance. The exercise can be tailored to your own individual needs so you can achieve the most out of each session you attend.

We run specific Pre and Post Natal classes but if these times and days are not convenient, you are welcome to join a beginners class. Due to the small numbers we can always give you alternative exercises were needed.

64% of Women develop incontinence symptoms during pregnancy.

The Pelvic Floor muscles are thought to help rotate the baby’s head before delivery.

Pilates For Men

Pilates for men

The misconception about Pilates is that it is just for woman or injured participants. The exercises in Pilates can be adapted to help aid rehabilitation but they can also be taken to advanced levels, which are far from easy. Many sports professional such as Tiger woods and the South African Rugby team incorporate Pilates in their daily training program to improve strength, flexibility and posture. If you are training for a specific event or just want to tone up your stomach muscles and increase flexibility this is the exercise for you.

Many men suffer from back pain or have experienced spinal injuries or prolapsed discs due to working in high intensity jobs or from sitting in front of a computer screen. These injuries and symptoms can occur for many different reasons ranging from limited flexibility (tight muscles that pull your spine out of alignment) weak stomach and back muscles so the spine is not supported and incorrect posture (not standing or sitting correctly). We can help you rectify all of these bad habits so come along and try a session. In all of our classes men are more than welcome to join and due to the small numbers in each class we are able to give you alternatives if the exercises feel to easy or you want to be pushed further.

50+ Pilates

Our 50+ classes are for our more mature clients who would like to participate in a Pilates class but need to take it slightly slower. We incorporate all of the Pilates Principles but focus mainly on improving joint mobility, balance, co ordination and increasing stomach and back muscle strength. Due to the rapid increase of Osteoporosis among so many ladies and gentlemen we incorporate weight baring strength exercises to increase bone density. Many of our clients who attend Pilates classes suffer from Arthritis and other medical conditions and are unable to move quickly or perform all of the exercises. This is not a problem as alternatives can always be given and our main priority is fundamentally comfort.

We always advise our clients to seek medical clearance before starting a Pilates Class.

Fit ball Classes

If you would like to try a class that is a more up beat and challenges you balance then the fit ball class is for you. You will be taught different exercises whilst sitting, lay and even kneeling on a fit ball. Like mat based Pilates all of the moves are progressional so you work at the level that you feel comfortable at. The fit ball like the other small pieces of equipment can either support or test you depending on how you use it.

Corporate Training

Many businesses promote good health and well being. Does your company have a spare office or function room to run a Pilates class before work or in your lunch break. We are happy to bring along all of the mats and equipment you need to run a session for yourself and your colleagues. Many companies subsidize the cost of exercise as it is in there interest to have healthy fit employees. Pilates reduces stress, helps combat back pain and could potentially reduce the number of sick days your employees might have. If you would like a quote please call us with an idea of the day and time you would like and the number of participants that would be attending the class.

Specific Condition and Rehabilitation

If you are unfortunate and have had an operated or are suffering from an illness or medical condition, we advise you to seek medical clearance before attending a class. Depending of the severity you might need to attend a Private 1 to 1 session so we can establish the level that you can work at and provide you with personal individual attention, as safety and your well being is our first priority. These are only a few of the condition we have managed to helped when participants have attend regular Pilates classes with us:

Multiple Sclerosis can become a crippling disease that gives chronic inflammatory and can affects the central nervous system. MS can cause a variety of symptoms, including changes in sensation, visual problems, muscle weakness, depression, difficulties with coordination and speech, severe fatigue, cognitive impairment, problems with balance, overheating, and pain. Depending on the serverity of the disease Pilates can help reduce the deteriation of balance and co ordination and relax your body to reduce the feeling of fatigue.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic syndrome that can give joint pain and muscle tenderness at 18 different trigger points all over the body. The severity can differ between each individual who has this condition. The lack of sleep and continuous fatigue can lead to depression and stress. To be clinically diagnosed with fibromyalgia you have to be suffering from at least 11 of the 18 tender points through out you body for 2 months. These points have to be painful on palpation. The clients I have trained have experienced gained great benefits from the relaxation and slow thoracic breathing. From observing my clients who have this illness I have noticed a few similarities between them, shallow fast breathing, anxiety and the loss of body control. By teaching them the Pilates Principles and incorporating this into their every day life the improvements have began to show. The ability to breath correctly has alone reduces tension with in them. Normally after participating in a general fitness class the next week they are bed ridden. They have told me when doing Pilates they have not experienced this side effect but feel energized and well.

Stress Urinary Incontinence can affect men and woman of all ages, it is when urine leaks from the bladder when stress is put on it. This could be coughing, sneezing or running. Pre and Postnatal ladies are at high risk or developing this condition due to weak pelvic muscles when carrying their baby or from having a natural labor. Tearing is very common when giving birth and can slow down the recovery process.

This condition can be embarrassing and stop you from carrying out your every day activities. Most cases can be improved if not stopped completely by performing simple exercises daily. Pilates main focus is the pelvic floor diaphragm so by attending a regular class we can try to improve the strength of your muscles. If you feel a one to one session would be more appropriate we can use diagnosis equipment, which will require an internal vaginal probe to be inserted and linked to a computer to gain valuable information. You would not be required to remove any clothing but it is advised to wear comfortable clothes.

Frozen Shoulder or adhesive capsulitis is a restriction of motion in the shoulder joint due to inflammation and scar tissue. The rotator cuff supports the capsule and stabilizes the shoulder girdle. When this becomes restricted and painful the range of movement is dramatically reduced. When participating in a Pilates class you will be show slow controlled mobility exercises that can help increase the range of movement and help breakdown the scar tissue. Unfortunately this can be painful but movement is fundamental to gaining a full recovery. The cause of Frozen shoulder is not fully understood and treatment is limited. Other injuries to the shoulder capsule are bursitis or tendonitis, this is also known, as an impingement.

PSD Pubic Synthesis Disorder is an agonizing ache in the pubic region that can restrict the ability to walk and sit. The two innominate bones meet at the pubic synthesis and are joined together by a fibrocartilage disc. Ladies can suffer from this during and after pregnancy as the relaxin allows the pelvic to separate. By improving the strength of pelvic diaphragm the pain can be reduced.

Spine Conditions Scoliosis, Kyphosis and Lordosis are only a few of the spinal disorders people suffer from. Theses conditions can either be hereditary or arise because of injury or bad posture. Pilates focuses on strengthening the trunk muscles that support the spine and persuading them to work in correct alignment. By increasing your flexibility the tight short muscles will begin to relax, this will improve your movement and release off any restrictions in joints. This will help facilitate the body back to a rebalanced state. Pilates is a great way to treat these conditions and can potentially slow down any spinal diteriate.
