NEW PILATES EQUIPMENT

Joseph Pilates was the inventor of Equipment Pilates at the beginning of the First World War. He became a nurse and specialised in physical rehabilitation for injured soldiers. Most of the soldiers were bed ridden so he devised different spring mechanisms that he could attach to their hospital beds to help them strengthen their muscles and improve flexibility and joint movement. Since then the designs of the equipment have progressed but the principle is still the same as you can see from the Cadillac table. The stable base is similar to that of a hospital bed.

The dynamic platform of the reformer allows support for the spine but encourages concentric and eccentric movement to challenge the body. The reformer can assist you when performing the moves or increase the intensity and challenge to achieve a full body workout. All of the Pilates principles of pelvic floor, neutral spine and breathing stay the same when incorporating equipment in to the session.

By using the spring loaded mechanism it allows you to work against resistance but keeps the movements flowing and controlled. This will allows you to enjoy a safe and effective session. All of the Reformers and Trapeze Tables have adjustable foot straps, ropes and headrests to meet each individual person’s specification. The trapeze Table also known as a Cadillac has a stable static base that still uses the spring-loaded mechanisms during most of the exercises. You are able to perform similar exercises to mat based Pilates but with the aid of the springs, it can help support injured or less stable clients. For more advanced participants the aid of foot straps and bars can be used to challenge the body further by perform more acrobatic moves. Once you have achieved an understanding of Mat Based Pilates, the equipment is a fun progression.

We strongly recommend attending one of our beginners Mat based Pilates courses before entering a beginners group Equipment class. We are very happy to give private or small group induction sessions for participants who have never participated in Pilates but would like to try the equipment.
